...that fostering the habit of reading in early childhood is a forceful tool, capable of impacting a child's cognitive skills for learning, communicating, and understanding. We firmly believe in the power of reading as a vehicle for social change to tackle educational poverty.
Thus the Cucú Foundation was born, a non-profit hub in which stories and reading/sharing experiences are designed for children, and the adults who accompany them (in spite of socioeconomic status or geographical borders).
Our focal project is CUCÚ, a printed and periodic magazine of the highest graphic and editorial quality co-created by a team of interdisciplinary collaborators.
We’ve reached an impressive number of children and their parents and teachers all around Colombia and regardless of insurmountable challenges that inevitably continue to arise we have kept doing so.
In 2020, due to a strategic alliance with private organizations we distributed more than 60,000 copies in Bogotá, reaching under-resourced communities, with insufficient (or non-existent) access to reading material and unawareness about the positive impact of reading since a very early age.
In addition, we joined grassroots-local organisations to distribute a great number of our material, in various territories: Nariño, Caquetá, Córdoba, Chocó, Antioquia, Huila, Sucre, La Guajira, Caldas, Magdalena, among others. These are marginalised territories, highly affected by the Colombian armed conflict, social inequalities and illegal economies.
